Fans of the upcycled Conner Ives T-shirt costume have no way of missing the message.

Photos surfaced on Thursday, June 6, of in New York City with her longtime companion, A$ AP Rocky. Rihanna was a walking billboard in a blue creative T-shirt dress with a big declaration in big white words: “I’m Retired.” While A$ AP was dressed down in a low-key polo shirt and pants. In a smaller font the sold- out clothing clothing continues, “This is as dressed- up as I get”. Rihanna paired a salt alternative Bottega Veneta and $90 Puma shoes with the sentiment.

Fans had a panic ( to put it mildly ) the second Rihanna’s dress appeared on X fan accounts. Since 2016’s Anti, Rihanna hasn’t released a new album, and the Rihanna’s Navy jokes that her EP from almost a decade ago was also her last. A top with the words “I’m Retired” in amazing words appeared to be confirmation of their worst fears about Spotify streaming.

“It’s giving expect no album”, one X user wrote while racking up several hundred likes. Some held out hope that the shirt may work in the fandom’s prefer: “Y’all relax, that’s just the title of her new album”, another said.

According to the artist behind her dress—and Rihanna’s new movements—it might not be either of those items.

Conner Ives confirmed Rihanna’s part was the company’s “30s slip super dress” on Instagram. The London- based, New York- raised artist, who founded his namesake company in 2020, primarily uses deadstock and upcycled material in each and every piece. The vintage tees used in Rihanna’s dress were definitely for a reason, though Ives kept the meaning concealed: “Always sending messages,” he.

Of course, Rihanna is otherwise too booked and busy to actually be retired. She made the announcement this week that on June 13 her Fenty empire would expand to include hair products. (Yes, a Marie Claire review is coming soon.) Although her T-shirt dress suggests that there is a cap on how much she can wear, Rihanna’s street style shows otherwise: After skipping the, she has been out and about wearing everything from dresses to slinky black leather blazers.

Then there’s the music itself: It may be taking its sweet time, but both Rihanna and A$ AP Rocky have joked that fresh songs are fact, on the way. “She’s working on it”, Rocky told fans in February.

Graphic tees with semi-ironic messages are a common sight on runways and celebrity street art. At this February, designer Batsheva Hay released a sweater with “HAG” knitted into the front in bold white letters. At its most recent show in Scotland, Dior also repurposed phrases that disparage women onto a top. On the sidewalks, both and featured in the tennis flick Challengers this spring.

Nothing that appears in a celebrity message is confirmed until the wearer makes a statement, as with any other messages. So for now, don’t assume that Rihanna is actually “retired”.
