The Andie Anderson Dress Is Remaining This June

As far as iconic romcom dresses go, Kate Hudson’s buttery in How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days ranks pretty high up on the list. And, with yellow seeming to be everyone’s favourite colour this summer, the millennial-approved dress is right back on our radar – over 20 years after it first stole out hearts in the cinema. Yellow, for summer? It might just be a little groundbreaking, after all.

Why We’re Still Loving The Millennial Yellow Dress

Let’s set the scene. It’s 2003; low-rise jeans are trending, the iPod third generation just hit stores and one of the most era-defining movies of the decade is out in cinemas. We’re of course talking about How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, the title that catapulted stars Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey into the upper echelons of romcom royalty. It’s a testament to the film’s staying power that it’s still adored today – but one scene (and one dress) in particular is getting a bit more love than usual this summer.

The scene in question is this: Ben (McConaughey) pulls up to the front steps of a swanky hotel, where Andie (Hudson) waits for his arrival. She does a cute twirl, showing off an elegant, backless yellow gown. Ben’s response is understandably short; a dopey grin and the words ‘you’re beautiful’. Shakespearean stuff.

THE NOVA DRESS. Made with deadstock materials🥹

It’s this dress that’s been creating a buzz amongst the style set this season. The millennial yellow satin, low cross-back dress has secured itself a spot on pretty much everyone’s Pinterest board – and while we can no longer get our hands on the original Carolina Herrera gown, there are plenty of brands out there flexing their design skills to bring a little early 2000s magic to the 2020s. Take B Corp certified fashion label Omnes, for example. The brand went viral last year for a showcasing its take on the Andie Anderson gown, soundtracked to movie-mashup version of Carly Simon’s ‘You’re So Vain’.

And, more recently, it’s been the dress of choice for pop girlie of the moment, Sabrina Carpenter. The singer celebrated her 25th birthday back in May, wearing a golden yellow drop-waist, cross-back mini dress resembling the How To Lose A Guy gown. With her long blonde hair and golden complexion, it wasn’t long before fans started to spot the similarities – with Hudson herself leaving her stamp of approval with the comment ‘That’s that Andie Anderson Espresso.’

But where does that leave us now? Nostalgia remains one of the hottest trends of the decade, so it’s probably safe to assume this movement isn’t going anywhere. We can see millennial yellow being the default colour for summer dresses this year, and, possibly, the next.
