Following the previous style mogul’s conviction on four counts of sexual abuse, Winnipeg has revoked from Peter Nygard what it calls its highest honor, the Major to the City.
St. Norbert- Seine River County spoke at a committee meeting on Thursday. According to Markus Chambers, Nygard, who established a clothing label in Winnipeg in 1967 that would later become known as Kygard International, won the award in 2008.
Following Nygard’s new beliefs and other charges against him that are still before the courts, Chambers therefore asked Mayor Scott Gillingham what steps were being taken to maintain the integrity of the honor.
In response, Gillingham said that he had asked the state’s process officer to remove Nygard from the list of important recipients in light of the convictions.
Nygard was taken off the list earlier this year, according to an email sent on Saturday by a Gillingham official.
Pilot Chris Hadfield and First Nations Child and Family Caring Society executive director Cindy Blackstock are two different original recipients of Winnipeg’s Essential to the City.
Critical to the City is one of the highest honors bestowed upon the town of Winnipeg. During a piece of Thursday’s committee meeting set aside for questions for the president, Chambers stated that it is intended to bestow trust and honor on citizens who have made significant contributions to our just city.
He continued,” Mr. Nygard’s new court trials, including his judgment, along with his ongoing legal issues, call into question the respect and honor the Key to the City represents.”
Chambers added that robbing the honor would encourage Nygard’s patients.
Gillingham retorted,” We do get this really seriously. The highest honor we can offer on one is” The Essential to the City.”
An Ontario jury found Nygard guilty of four sexual assault charges earlier this month. He was found not guilty of a cost of forced confinement as well as the fifth count. The accusations that led to the claims dated from the 1980s until the middle of the 2000s.
During the trial, five ladies testified that they had been invited to Nygard’s office at 1 Niagara St. in Toronto under a variety of pretexts, including tours and job interviews. All of their interactions had culminated in sexual assaults on four of the women in the top-floor bedroom suite.
Later this month, his imprisonment time is to be determined. His defense attorneys have stated that they are weighing their options for appealing the decision.
The Nygard company had commercial locations in both Canada and the United States and produced women’s clothing under a number of brand names.
His shops in Winnipeg were again covered in images of the tycoon. A” Nygard gallery” with a ceiling collage of images depicting Nygard with politicians, actors, musicians, and designs was part of the original company’s enormous head office and submission building.
Previous Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman and then-deputy leading Holly Stefanson attended a dinner in 2018 to celebrate the 50th celebration of Nygard International. Hockey fanatic Teemu Selanne from the Winnipeg Jets sent a film greeting.
Marshall stated that he would want the Major to the City again if the accusations against Nygard were proven in court when they first surfaced in 2020.
Nygard is also facing criminal charges in three additional jurisdictions, including the United States. In Quebec and Manitoba, he has been charged with forced confinement and sexual assault in individual cases since the 1990s.
In those other areas, nothing of Nygard’s accusations have been put to the test in court.
Following a February 2020 FBI and police raid on Nygard’s offices in New York City, he resigned from his position as president of the company. Since then, the business has declared bankruptcy and filed for bankruptcy.
