With marriages comes large decisions—and the pressure to make people happy.

One bride-to-be felt this intensely after she refused to wear a brilliant wedding dress from her upcoming sister-in-law, leading to rivalries within the community.

The original poster (OP) stated that “my mother’s wedding dress has been passed down for generations, and I remember when I was a young girl dreaming of walking down the aisle in it.” “We have recently been wedding planning and we were invited to a dinner hosted by my fiance’s family …sister-in-law  stood up and tapped her spoon against her glass, and said that she had to make a toast.”

The OP explained that her sister-in-law returned with a sizable plastic carrier inside which contained her bridal dress from two years ago.

“Everyone began clapping as sister-in-law announced that this was her official wedding gift to us, and she wanted to me to wear her dress at the wedding”, she wrote. “Everyone began asking me what was wrong as I tried to smile, but I guess I didn’t do a good job hiding my disappointment. I tried to explain how I wanted to wear my mother’s dress and that it was nothing personal, but that I refused to wear my sister-in-law’s dress.”

The statement led to panic. The OP’s potential sister-in-law began crying, and the OP herself burst into tears and ran inside. Lastly, her girlfriend came out to her—but just to cry at her to get into the vehicle.

She said, “I was so perplexed, but I got into the car only to hear him chide me for making such a huge image and embarrassing him in front of his home. My fiance also said how sister-in-law was just trying to be nice and that her dress was more modern compared to my mother’s dress which looked like an ‘old rag’.”

Individuals in the remarks largely back the OP.

“Ma’am you need to keep that entire household behind including your fiance”, one person wrote. “You just had a peek into your future if you carry on with this relationship”.

“Do not spend your grandma’s wedding dress on this man”, another said. “He doesn’t deserve it”.

Severe response:

Niloufar Esmaeilpour, registered medical advisor and somatic experiencing specialist at Lotus Therapy & Counseling Centre, told Newsweek that the in-laws’ annoyed at the wedding was understandable—but just to an amount.

“One can understand—to a point—the upset of the wife’s family, as one would assume that their product was a way to display passion and to make the wedding one of their own home”, she said. Their response “really crossed a line,” even more so if the wedding was subjected to any form of pressure or guilt.

Esmaeilpour claimed that some brides want to use it, and that it is “very personal” to choose what to wear.

“So, a wife feels very important about feeling comfortable and happy with the items she chooses”, she said. This circumstance very properly reflects contempt for the bride’s freedom and personal preferences, which are traits that can and are present in all relationships.

Moving forward, Esmaeilpour advised marital counseling for the few, which would enable highlight deeper issues.

“Maybe in the future, the two partners could only openly discuss their objectives with each other, yet the boundaries”, she said. “Basically, the two sides of the family should be supportive and respect both decisions of the couple, bearing in mind that, after all, it is the wedding day of only the two involved.”

“In a way, their happiness should be the prime concern. Effective communication and reciprocal respect are essential in this conflict, and they could provide a solid foundation for the future.”
