While weddings on the sandy shore are popular with some, these nuptials may cause some ambiguity in the guests regarding what to wear. As opposed to such as concoction, semi-formal, or formal, the “beach” aspect often adds a complex component to some style rules given the comfortable, great, and relaxed vibe of seaside locales. But, as a host, how do you decide on your day-of search? Beach wedding dress is similar to any other marriage, with the exception of a formal wedding, but there are some minor adjustments to the decor and fabrics that will make you feel a lot more at ease, according to marriage planner Megan Papageorge. More precisely, the time of the year, and the facility will add to your ultimate outfit option.

We spoke with Papageorge, wedding photographer Pamela Spence, and other wedding professionals to help break down all you need to know about shore wedding clothes for both men and women, to make things as clear as possible.

Beach Marriage Attire for Men and Women according to Dress Code

Spence information that “the two biggest differences between beach wedding dress and various wedding dress code lies in the colour palette and clothing. A little black dress and shoes are not commonly seen at beach weddings. Alternatively, guests may use lightweight fabrics, entertaining prints, and plain, high-end staples for an easy yet refined beach wedding look.”

Formal Beach Wedding Attire

A dress, suit, or —in lighter colors (avoiding cream and white ) and breathable fabrics —are all acceptable for women to wear to a beach formal wedding. Consider luxurious fabrics like lace and tulle, both of which are light and airy but have an upscale vibe. As for shoes, since stilettos are a hazard on the sand, wear chunky heels or formal wedge sandals. If the wedding isn’t taking place on the beach, however, you can bring a formal pair of heels to wear for the evening.

Men should wear a jacket and slacks, a long-sleeved shirt, or both. Solid colors, like beige and light blue (avoiding cream and white ), are also recommended. Additionally, be sure to select a look with a breathable fabric such as linen, khaki, or seersucker (you don’t want to burn up under the summer sun). Shorts and sandals are not permitted, but dress shoes or a nice pair of shoes that go with the slacks are recommended.

Semi-Formal or Cocktail Beach Wedding Attire

Semi-formal or cocktail beach wedding attire for women calls for dresses, suits, or jumpsuits. ( Feel free to include prints, or any style that might clash with the venue. ) If you choose to wear a beachy dress, specifically, consider a tea-length or maxi look to avoid looking too casual. Not sure what footwear to choose? Dressy sandals, chunky heels, and wedges are acceptable footwear options.

As for men, while a jacket isn’t required, a breathable sports coat or unique blazer is a fun choice. Additionally, don’t be afraid to include prints, but avoid anything too loud that would take the attention away from the couple. On the shoe front, your footwear can be a little more casual, but they absolutely must be a close-toe option, such as a loafer or deck shoe. Again, shorts and sandals are not permitted.

Casual Beach Wedding Attire

Women should opt for a simple sundress, breezy maxi dress, or high-quality romper. And while dressy sandals are acceptable, avoid standard, beachwear flip-flops.

Women should take into account minor details that don’t conflict with the theme without going overboard. Choose a fishtail braided hairstyle or wear a sweetgrass to elegantly add a beachy vibe.

Short-sleeved shirts, such as polos, are permitted for men, as well as nice shorts ( think Chinos ) with a belt. In general, stick with lighter colors and/or bold prints, and absolutely avoid denim, cargo, swim shorts, and cotton T-shirts. Only in this situation, though, should sandals be worn. However, make sure your feet are clean before weighing an open-toe look. If not, wear a deck shoe or loafer, never sneakers.

Additional Beach Wedding Attire Etiquette Guidelines

Although the dress code is typically formal, some couples may just ask for “beach wedding attire.” If that’s the case, “It’s always better to be overdressed than under-dressed”, advises Papageorge. “In the event that the invitation doesn’t indicate formality, dress for a semi-formal event.”

What Not to Wear to a Beach Wedding

Another important rule to remember is that this isn’t a family outing at the beach—it’s a wedding. If choosing sandals, make sure they’re dressier than your typical beachy flip flops. Leave bathing suits and swim shorts at home. Sun hats are permitted, but you must remove them at this time to avoid blocking the view of other guests. Avoid cotton and denim t-shirts at all costs.

Whether it’s a breezy maxi dress, a seersucker suit, a formal romper, or a palm print jumpsuit, beach attire is a fun way to showcase your personality and rock some warm-weather favorites—just don’t forget to lather on the sunscreen!
