Long Live the Mall Suit

Before y’all pity me, I know how crazy this sounds. In Esquire, advocating for a mall-brand coat. I should be debating neck dimensions, make patterns, and materials with fellow fashion guys. Every person should understand the value of making friends with a tailor.

But hear me out. I’m young, cracked, and have amassed a little collection of also- nice- for- my- income vintage suits at estate sales, eBay auctions, and consignment stores. However, wearing those meets sounded like a gimmick. I had a penchant for cute costume and a Pitti Italian peacock all my life. I needed a Level One match that I may buy at a discount and include into my way to everyday New York City closet. I needed precisely this Abercrombie & Fitch Collins match.

You can wear it challenging, stress free.

I thought I needed to “baby” my kinder suit. Now that I’ve got a nice clean solution, I know that’s not true. However, I was really not interested in ruining the exquisite cotton and wool blends. This coat? Couldn’t care less about ruining it. With its nylon- viscose- elastin blend, I’d possess a tough time doing but, anyway. It’s very much stain resistant, so instead of spending time and money clean washing, I merely area clean it myself. I’ve cleaned beverages, mustard, and capital dirt off it in my toilet, no worries. And since the building is merely some light structure in the shoulders and chest, I may possibly throw it in the washer and be fine. I won’t, don’t worry, but just know I could. This is what a lot of people need, in my opinion, in 2024. You’ve become accustomed to wearing simple attire. Why not begin the simple match leveling away?

You can have it altered to look more attractive.

I don’t know who said it, but the old truth is still true. Buying cheap and spending money on a seamstress is always preferable to spending money on the coat itself when purchasing an off-the-rack match. If you’re one of those people who only buys a fit when he’s asked to attend a bride, take that advice. The only thing I had to do was have a seamstress cut an inch off my ankle, making it look perfect with a pair of boots. I may have completely skipped sewing if I were primarily wearing shoes with it.

Abercrombie’s Collins is cut with no preconceptions across the board. It’s certainly big, but it should match most men off- the- rack. Those that want a more personalized look you bite the neck, taking in the arms, and all that. But, I think the beauty of this coat is it’s get it and get perspective. Don’t spend anymore than like $100 getting it tailored. It doesn’t deserve anymore than that. Wearing it and just be glad you sported it.

A low coat is American history.

To get intellectual, I really think this coat is a scripture to what British fashion is all about. It’s the present sack match. You don’t get the over-the-top structure and formality of a British suit. You don’t get Italian sprezzatura, either. It’s a fastball down the middle: some structure, some drape, and a really National idea that dirt- low off- the- rack is great plenty.

Certain, I would like the collar to become wider. And I wish the suit was longer so bad. However, this suit helped me incorporate the devil may care Americana design into my more conventional wardrobe because I’ve always pursued that. Mostly because I actually don’t care what happens. It’s the pants and a t- top of all my suit. I’ve worn it to bars with a band shirt, a football match, a cross- state domestic flight (economy seat), a Saturday in the garden, and supper with a link. Someone once said to me, “I always looked good.” It’s just good enough for all occasions, and that’s exactly what I needed from this cheap little mall suit.
