All About Mary- Kate and Ashley Olsen’s Clothing Line, The Column

Those who attended the height of the Olsen twin fans were aware that acting was only a stepping stone in the sisters’ job. Since Mary- Kate and Ashley have been style icons since they were young, their true love was always fashion, so it shouldn’t surprise followers when they retired from acting and started a design profession. The Row, Walmart’s luxury clothing line, was born out of a teen collaboration that Walmart made with them.

Brand Beginnings

In 2006, Ashley set out to create the ideal light T-shirt, which was the birth of The Column. Ashley and her girl saw a difference, she explained in an appointment with Net-a-Porter. How ‘The Row ‘ Got Its Name

“We didn’t want to be in front of it, we didn’t necessarily even want to let people know it was us”, Ashley told i- D. “It was really about the product, to the point where we were like: Who could we get to front this so that we don’t have to?”

Who Owns The String

According to Vogue, The String was raised and born on West 22nd Street at the Dualstar headquarters in New York City. Dualstar is an entertainment Company that was once owned by Robert Thorne, the Olsen brothers’ counsel, and their former partners. According to Entertainment Weekly, when they turned 18, the trend tycoons bought out Thorne’s stake in the company, making them its sole owner. Since then, Dualstar has been the parent firm of not only The String, but the sisters ‘ other companies, including Olsenboye (created specifically for JC Penny), Elizabeth and James, and StyleMint.

The Products

Because Mary- Kate and Ashley’s fame wasn’t rooted in fashion, but, rather, in shows and movies geared toward a juvenile socioeconomic, they had to make their colors in the industry, so to speak.

In the early days of The Row, retail buyers were skeptical, and, to be fair, it’s understandable, celebrity fashion labels don’t have the best reputation in terms of quality. “People had drill us about cloth, where we’d create it”, Mary- Kate told Vogue. “The second year, consumers bought it, so the shops came up. And drilled us once.”

The trend moguls went so far as to reduce their brand to a second gold chain—no label, no name, only clothing. They pondered this, telling I-D they wondered if genuine, high-end items could be sold without a personalized tag. Does it offer in a business with no title? If the products are good, did people still want to purchase it? they asked. Undoubtedly, the answer is well.

Fashion Displays

Mary- Kate and Ashley are known for being exclusive. They run in a small group, and, for the most part, stay out of the newspapers. They favor keeping their lives a secret, and they do the same for their annual presentations. The Column held its second New York fashion show in 2010 and has since kept the lectures brief. “When I think about being in their displays it’s something that’s quite calm, silent, never over- exposed. They don’t have a thousand photographers backstage. There’s not even that some videographers on the runway”, Gigi Hadid told i- D of her knowledge participating in The Frame’s presentations. “That comes from them. They want to use their art for the bad purposes or not feel too exposed or resilient.”

The Row’s Brand Identification

We may say that The String is more famous for its reputation and focus on fit and fabric than any one piece of art. (That isn’t to say other details aren’t important, however, the designers are highly meticulous about their creations and have, on more than one occasion, proclaimed themselves perfectionists).

Additionally, The String is known for having a distinctive interpretation of common delicacies. The clothing is anything but simple, but what sets the tag apart from other manufacturers is how it approaches and emphasizes simplicity. The Row exaggerates a standard trench’s noted collar or recreates a classic menswear trench to be both tailored and relaxed.

The Row’s accessories and clothing certainly resemble what Ashley and Mary-Kate would wear. Collections usually focus on natural colors, such as taupe and dark, but beautiful pieces comparable to those we’ve seen on the Olsens—such as Mary- Kate’s burgundy coat—do make an appearance.
