When most teens were younger and in need of new clothes, they just went to the store. But in her hometown of Placerville in rural Northern California, that wasn’t an option. She would rather go retro shopping with her mother and repurpose items they discovered. According to Dawn Baskauskas, “growing up in a very little town was the normal thing to do.” We made it work because there was no shopping about, which was really enjoyable, and it expressed my desire to be seen as special, and to produce these one-of-a-kind pieces to wear and express myself. It started it with my adolescence.
When Dawn Baskauskas moved to LA to function as a type a few years later, she continued that history. She gained notoriety for her distinctive floral dress design, which was not widely used at the moment. She recalls that she would show up on established wearing these dresses that she would imitate with her native tailor in Santa Monica and that I would always get compliments on them. “I do get stopped when we were out, asking ‘where did you get your outfit?’ People in the industry were noticing my architecture style and how I dressed. I was like a sponge, soaking up everything I was seeing that was truly inspiring as I continued to model and gained more and more customers.”
Dawn Baskauskas, her then-boyfriend and now-husband, Aras Baskauskas, informed her when she returned from a photo shoot that she wanted to launch her personal business. They all joined forces to create five patterns in 2014, starting with the same colors. The co-founders acknowledge that creating a happy accident led to the creation of the eco-conscious company. Tapping into their own discounts, cash was limited. “Christy wanted to make beautiful dresses, but we couldn’t go to a fabric provider and order the minimums because we didn’t have the money”, Baskauskas says. Additionally, we lacked the funds to hire an artist to create a display. Thus, we bought deadstock material instead, which is the residual materials from another companies.
They collaborated with a friend of a professional photographer to take beautiful pictures and were early Instagram people, which helped them quickly expand the product because of Dawn Baskauskas’ history as a unit. Looking up at their very, the cosmetic has evolved, but the DNA is apparent in those pictures. “The secret is in Christy’s styles”, Baskauskas says. “People actually responded to Christie’s patterns and then we told the story of deadstock. That made it seem very good to say that we weren’t a part of the issue. We sold over immediately.”
They produced their first designs in various deadstock fabrics, basically producing limited edition drops weekly. “But we finally realized this is not responsible for ourselves,” Dawn Baskauskas says. Additionally, we were taking a deeper look at where deadstock material comes from as we evolved and began to understand the market more fully. Who made it? What is it printed with? Is it pure colour? Is it made of colour? Does this material benefit my brain? From that point on, things started to change about how we wanted to grow our business.
One of the silhouettes that Christy Dawncreated, is also their best owner ten years later and has gained a brand following, as did Dakota Johnson, Taylor Swift, and Hilary Duff, to name a few. “That was the first outfit that I always designed”, Dawn Baskauskas says. “The constancy of that item is so obvious. Additionally, it has a picture that is truly flattering on all brain types. If you want to change it to be really fitted or a little loose, it has a snap closing for a bigger or smaller neck or a smaller breasts. It’s the best size. Physically, I loved it when I was pregnant and postpartum. It’s the kind of clothing you wear everyday and you dress it up. You can go in it, it’s very pleasant and easy.”
The Dawn Dress is reimagined once more in a. While some designs, like The Dawn Dress, are timeless, they frequently reintroduce silhouettes from previous collections as a result of consumer demand and information research that determines past hits. This summer, Christopher Dawn will debut a little men’s series for the first time. For the new images, as often, Dawn Baskauskas looked to nature as her artist. “I grew up with 10 acres, and we had ponies and animals and I was always outside”, she says. There are so many wonderful flowers, fruits, and splendor that come with each time, and I’m still so inspired by it today. That sparked their flower, fruit and lunch- inspired prints.
No matter the display, the gowns are all about Christy Dawn’s plantation- to- closet approach. According to Baskauskas, “the dopamine hit of not being part of the problem wasn’t hitting so hard anymore,” following their initial success and an investment from investors. What would it mean to be more than just not a part of the problem was the creation of that, he said? What would it mean to be part of a remedy? With four hectares of cloth, they established their own renewable cotton farm, which has grown to 80 acres.
They started their two and a half decades ago to ask the whole Christian Sunrise community to join. You can constantly support the growth of your clothing, according to Baskauskas. People spend $200 to manage 3,485 square feet of land, and the company receives a return on the investment in the form of store credit six months later. According to Dawn Baskauskas, “You can be in a mutual relationship with the producers and the land.” Every quarter on the land, we provide “these wonderful updates,” such as the fabric is beginning to grow or the seedlings just went in the ground.
Every bit of Christy Dawnclothing is handcrafted in LA using recycled materials, organic cotton, and sustainable materials. The company has regenerated 239 acres of farmland and sequestered 2 million kg of carbon thus far, making them a head in social creation on a global scale.
Conservation has always been at the core of Christy Dawn, but it’s the images and simple gown silhouettes that have given the company a religion following. People are purchasing our clothes because they believe they will look stunning in them, according to Baskauskas. “They’re certainly buying the clothes because they’re grown regeneratively, but that is woven into every string.” When you fall in love with how you feel while wearing Christy Dawn, Dawn Baskauskas says, “We start sprinkling in all of the important ways that we make the clothing. I feel really proud of what we’ve done.”
