Retail sales rose by a better- than- expected 2.9% in May as increased sales, better weather and offers saw consumers transfer to large streets, according to officials.

Following a disappointing month, when days of heavy rainfall affected desire in much of the nation, it comes after.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) released a report on Friday that non-food stores had strong monthly growth in May, with a rise in sales of clothing and furniture in particular.

Clothing, sports equipment, activities and toys outlets even experienced an improvement in their volume of sales.

News polled academics who had anticipated a increase of about 1%.

However, the ONS even revised its financial sales figures for April.

It had previously predicted a worse-than-expected 2.3% fall, but it now states a 1.8% drop.

Financial services company EY’s Silvia Rindone claimed that bank breaks in May also “provided retailers with a much-needed sales improve.”

A summer full of high-profile recreational activities like the UEFA Euro 2024 and the Paris Olympics, in addition to better conditions and the possibility of political change, she continued.

Although these future events are beyond the merchants ‘ power, they offer a fantastic opportunity to increase sales.

Recessionary behavior eases

The Statistics reported that sales levels increased by 3.5% in May, the most significant monthly increase in three years, including department stores and homeware retailers.

“These merchants reported improved sales, better conditions, and the effects of promotions,” officials said.

Non-store stores, which primarily sell items online, also reported a 5.9% increase in sales month over month.

According to scholar Andrew Wishart of Capital Economics, lower prices may be starting to motivate people to spend more on their cards.

He continued, “It appears that now that inflation is again at its normal level is feeding through to stronger investing, the May retail sales data show hints of strengthening real money development.”

“As long as inflation continues to behave, this might not prevent an interest rate cut in August, although a strengthening in activity could mean the pace of rate cuts thereafter is gradual.”

The figures, according to Oliver Vernon-Harcourt, head of wholesale at Deloitte, suggest that as more people “release their purse strings and spend money on discretionary items like clothes and furniture.”

Kris Hamer, chairman of information at the British Retail Consortium, said retailers may be hoping the latest start of Euro 2024 will further increase spending on snacks, alcohol, and television sets for June’s figures.

He added that if England can win their last game, it could provide the market the boost it needs, as they could advance to the knockout levels.
