The person behind the popular social media post featuring ‘#TheDress’, which reportedly caused a shake on the internet, has been sentenced to four- and- a- quarter years in jail for assaulting his family, BBC reported, citing the Glasgow High Court.
During a dispute at their home on the island of Colonsay in Argyll and Bute in March 2022, Keir Johnston, 39, apparently pinned his companion Grace to the surface and choked her.
When a picture of his mother-in-law’s clothing sparked a contentious online discussion over its color in 2015, the couple’s relationship gained widespread media attention. They also appeared on the in the US, where they received$ 10, 000 and a pleasure trip to Grenada.
Here’s what happened
The child’s marriage was described as “volatile,” and according to the BBC statement, Johnston became angry with his family during an argument at their home. Eventually, he tackled her to the surface and strangled her with both arms.
Johnston reportedly kept her throat in tension until a witness intervened and separated them. He therefore reportedly threatened to “finish her off”, engaged in another conflict with his partner, brandished a knife, uttered a deeper threat that” somebody was going to die”, and finally attempted self- harm, as per the court proceedings.
Last month, he admitted sadness in the same court for assaulting his wife, injuring her, and putting her life in danger. The defense attorney argued that Johnston had deliberately sought help for his behavioral issues and that a non-custodial sentence should be considered.
However, the judge determined that just a judicial word was correct, saying, “She feared for her life. The killing lasted 20 minute”. The judge added that Grace’s memory of the incident may have a long-lasting effect and that she was unable to understand her husband’s absence of regrets.
Johnston also received a 10-year ban from contacting or coming near his wife, which was reduced from 60 times due to his first innocent appeal.
What was the initial shade of ‘The Dress’?
The trend started with a picture of a costume posted on Instagram, where users debated whether it was light, gold, or blue, black, or white. Despite the clothing being “black and blue,” common argument erupted because of how many people perceived the photo as white and gold due to its circumstances.
Over a month, the gown garnered over ten million comments, with yet celebrities like Taylor Swift striking in, adding to the popular feeling.
This finding made it possible for different human color perceptions, leading to scientific investigations in vision and neuroscience.
Researchers published research on the phenomenon on May 14. Their findings suggest that differences in perceived color are related to how the brain interprets colors under various lighting conditions, known as color constancy.
In one study involving 1, 401 participants, 57% saw the dress as blue- black, 30 % as white- gold and smaller percentages as blue- brown or other colours.
Some participants reported that after repeated testing, their perception of the dress’s colors changed. These variations in color perception are likely caused by the brain’s presumptions about the dress’s illumination.
