Dressed to the nines and ready to eat, drink and getting down on the dance floor! On Monday evening, thousands of people over the age of 60 attended the second annual” Top Prom” held by the Shelby County Government.
The event aims to foster a sense of community and join seniors who enjoy going outside and having fun. It’s also about staying meet: keeping the head, body, and spirit in good shape as you age.
Shelby County elders actually showed up for the Senior Prom this year.
As guests entered The Kent, gleam photos on the red carpet waved hello.
Sheila and Ronald Towns have danced together for Senior Prom for the next day, and they both told Action News 5 that they adore everything about it.
“The meals”, Sheila replied when asked what she enjoys. Ronald followed up with,” the meal, and the music, and a small dancers”!
This was Evelyn Jones- Talley’s second Senior Homecoming, and she said it was amazing.
“The brotherhood. The fact that individuals our time can do what we can do,” she said. “We’re dancing. We’re laughing, eating, it’s a good time”!
Stan “The Bell Ringer” Bell handled DJ work, and the “Gary Goin Group” brought the house down. The Senior Prom purpose includes getting out on the dance floors and remaining active in their golden years.
Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris stated to the group, “We’re here to continue supporting the cause of Shelby Cares, and Shelby Cares promotes good life!”
The University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine and the Shelby County Office of Innovation collaborate in a community-wide program called Shelby Cares.
According to statistics, Shelby County elders are eager to sign up for the program.
“This is our biggest top graduation still,” said Danielle Inez, director of advancement at Shelby County. “We had over 600 elderly RSVP this month, that’s double last year’s RSVPs.”
Mary Simmons skipped her 12th-grade graduation but did not attend her 11th-grade homecoming. She claimed that this graduation was superior to both!
“You’re surrounded, meeting people”, said Simmons. “I see a lot of my church people around, it’s excellent! I’m having a lot of fun for a 76- season- older woman. Fun, joy, fun”!
Even though everyone at the Senior Prom treated like royalty, the event did also have a King and Queen crowned.
“Simply keep on admiring and respect the Lord”, said Sheila Towns, “And if you’re retired, come on down. It’s wonderful. Every time, I look forward to it.”
